Frequently Asked Questions - Health and Welfare Plan

Can I continue coverage by paying for it myself after I stop working for my employer?

  • No, the Plan is paid for by your employer, and coverage is only provided to people who are working for employers who are participating in the Plan.

Am I covered for out of the country emergencies when I travel?

  • Yes, with the GSC travel benefit, emergency services up to a maximum of $1,000,000 per covered person per calendar year are covered. Eligible benefits are limited to a maximum of 60 days per trip commencing with the date of departure from your province of residence. If you are hospitalized on the 60th day, benefits will be extended until the date of discharge.

Once I become a member of the Plan are there any waiting periods for the services provided by the Plan?

  • No, all coverage under our Plan starts immediately.

Can I get coverage for my girlfriend or boyfriend?

  • Only if you have been living with them in a common law relationship for at least 6 months.

My spouse and I have split up and are now living separately. I don't know if we'll be getting back together, but can I continue their coverage?

  • No, as long as you and your spouse are living apart coverage cannot continue for them. If and when you do get back together, coverage would start again.

Once I leave my employer can I get personal coverage for my dental and extended health needs?

  • Yes, personal coverage is available through a number of sources. Depending on your circumstances it may be advantageous to roll over from the ILHW Plan to a personal plan, and we encourage you to look into this. If you are in this position give our office a call and we will get you started in the right direction.

If I leave my employer and go to work for another employer who participates in the Plan do I have to put in the waiting period to join the Plan again?

  • Only if the period of time you are off the Plan is longer than 18 months. If you start with your new employer within 18 months you are immediately eligible to join again.
